“Friend. Haven’t heard that word in…a long time,” he said.
His smile was a lot creepier than Annie
expected but she appreciated the effort.
Something growled outside the garbage dumpster and she fell back into an open bag of trash.
“Ew.”
Brushing what she
hoped was discarded pizza sauce from her sleeve, Annie pulled herself up and
peeked out into the alley.
“While the stockile of
dog food in your man-cave is impressive, I think you need to come with me
before the meat patrol regroups.”
“Where?” Stein grunted
and followed Annie out into the alley.
“Back to the garage.
We’ll get you a blanket and some fresh, well fresher, clothes and get you
settled in. I saw a wrecked ambulance a
couple blocks away that I need to stop at first.”
The unlikely duo, him
an easy foot and a half taller than her, walked out to the street when someone
yelled from behind a parked police cruiser.
“Annie, get down,” the voice
screamed as the sound of rifle fire pierced the darkened street.
Annie felt the full
weight of her new friend as his body slumped over, taking her to the
ground with him.

Enjoyed this. The term "meat patrol" made me smile both during the intro and in the snippet. Looking forward to reading more.
ReplyDeleteThanks, T.M. - the term does seem to be well-received - I may have to consider that as a title!
DeleteWhy do I have the feeling this is making itself up as you go along? Possibly because you hinted as much way back when? (I hope they didn't kill Frankenstein.)
ReplyDeleteMaybe because of the every fifteen line cliffhanger? Ha. You're right. It's my running weekly creative writing exercise. At this rate, I should have a novella ready by....oh 2018? It's still fun though.
DeleteDog food and pizza sauce? What else does he have in his larder? As for the shots, let's hope Stein is just trying to protect her rather than slumping over dead on her.
ReplyDeleteIt's part of the post-apocalyptic cook book I'm putting in the back of the book - we'll have to wait and see where the shot leads. Thanks for the comments.
DeleteAnd so the plot twists in a new direction - Annie has other friends, apparently, who may or may not appreciate her new acquaintance. I'm enjoying this sequence - I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Peter. I'm having a lot of fun playing it week to week. As far as looking forward to seeing where it goes - me too!
DeleteWhy do I get the feeling Annie's friends are bugged about her new 'friend'?! :P
ReplyDeleteWhat gives you that impression?
