Welcome to another
Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday and a fresh writing snippet from one of my
WIP’s – Myth-In-Law. The secrets of Sam’s mystery book are at his
fingertips and all to be revealed.
Maybe. I hope you enjoy this
week’s contribution and if you haven’t, please check back at some of the
earlier snippets. Make sure you check
out all the great writing over at SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com . There’s a bunch of
fantastic writers over there that provide some entertaining weekend
reading. Leave a few comments along the
way, they’re always appreciated!
Opening the center desk drawer, Sam
bent the end of a paperclip into a hook and fished around inside the book’s
binding until he felt resistance. Gently
tugging at paused intervals, he pulled out a gold ring emblazoned with an
intricately detailed crucifix.
Noticing the inscription inside the
ring, Same held his flashlight closer and read, “ Ex umbra in Solem. Looks
like we have a winner.”
Sam aligned the ring’s cross with the
clasp and the book vibrated against the desk top. The computer screen next to him flickered
with images of bizarre creatures and pages from unknown texts. A gust of wind slammed a tree limb against the
library window, startling him out of the chair.
“Come on, just open the thing.”
Inching his hand closer to the clasp, he
felt the key touch the lock and he held his breath as he turned.
“Sam, I’m home!”
Uh-oh..Vibrating books...that can't be good. And just Sam's luck that someone comes home, right when the book's about to open. What a place to leave us hanging!! Brilliant stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks, T.K. Sam and his new book are about to become best friends, whether he likes it or not
DeleteARGH!! Nooo!! Banging windows, vibrating books and a heck of a cliffhanger. Woo-hoo!
ReplyDeleteLittle did you know that we're in to chapter 32 and when he finally gets it open its over. Tadaaa!
DeleteHe's brave to want the book open after all of that. Gotta love a character willing to explore the unknown and possibility dangerous despite warning signs. I love the detail of the computer flickering.
ReplyDeleteSam had an adventurer's heart passed down the generations. Let's hope some bravery trickled down with it. Thanks for the comments. Means a lot.
DeleteGreat detail. What is inside the book? Ignore the intruder, Sam. Open the book!
ReplyDeleteHa. That's the hardest part of these snippets- keeping from just putting it all out there. Trying to walk the line between tension and frustration.
DeleteAre the books contents getting onto the computer screen? And is that a real voice, or one from the book?
ReplyDeleteI wondered if the voice's origin would be clear in the snippet. Could be an unexpected homecoming. Magic and science are strange bedfellows.
DeleteIf the book had focused its energies on opening itself instead of vibrating and slamming tree branches against the window, we'd have perused its contents and been halfway home by now. Sheesh! What a waste of energy. ;) Nice scene, and what a place to leave us!
ReplyDeleteI know! If all reading was this much exercise I would be like totally buff dude. Gotta do some squats and read three chapters tonight!
ReplyDeleteNice snippet! Great cliffhanger!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time and Glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteOh dear! This is *not* the time for mom to be coming home!
ReplyDeleteGreat snippet as always!
He's so busted. Moms have like a spider sense about these kinds of things. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLol, I so wasn't expecting the end. I was focused on what was happening with the book. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHa. Thanks. I'm trying to keep my streak of cliffhangers going. That did come out of left field.
DeleteI love the mixture of ancient sorcery and modern technology. And the ending is wonderful - sudden jolt and reminder of mundane reality. Great sequence - thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Peter! I'm enjoying how the story is progressing and the directions it's taking. Hope to throw a few more curves out in the coming weeks
